Hey everyone, so I just wanted to let you know about something exciting we’ve been working on over here. Brace yourselves…

We’re putting inventory pictures online.

Now, if you’ve visited our store you know that that’s almost impossible because of how much stuff we have, which is exactly why we’ve scoffed at the idea for so many years and why, now that we’ve started this undertaking, it’s taking longer than even we imagined.

But we’ve made huge strides and it’s nearly done (since it’s not complete, do call us if you’re looking for something specific that you don’t see). For now, the collection is on Flickr, but soon it will be seamlessly incorporated into our website. Dreamy, I know. Over time we’ll be fleshing it out with measurements and prices to make it even more useful to you.

Warm Brass

After years of cool nickel, chrome, and stainless steel, brass is making a big comeback, even in kitchens and bathrooms. It’s not the super-shiny yellow lacquered brass that went out years ago, but a warmer, golden, weathered brass. The very best patinas take time to develop – start with raw brass and let it do its thing – but if you’re in a rush, we have a few shortcuts that look almost as good at the real thing.

Welcome to the final day of the DS Advent Calendar. I left this ’til last, but maybe it should have been first? Here’s the easiest gift for any house on your list: the gift certificate. The measurements and style are juuuust right.

DS Advent Calendar, Day 22: Relic table lamps

I think advent calendars are supposed to go to the 25th, but since we’re closed on the 24th and beyond I guess this is our second-last entry! Today’s pick is interesting: more modern than most things in our store, but a really great pairing of old and new:

These sleek, simple lamps use our antique tiles for bases. Beautifully-patterned floor tiles are a hallmark of North Africa and the Middle East. Culled from flea markets in Cairo, these well-worn concrete tiles are given new life with a modern shade, but still they remind us of sipping sweet mint tea in a bustling bazaar. Relic table lamps, $225 each.

DS Advent Calendar, Day 21: Stamped Brass Number Tags

After yesterday’s triple-decker lighting extravaganza, I thought we’d keep it simple with a stocking stuffer for today’s DS Advent Calendar gift: Stamped brass number tags.

Since we got them in, people have been using them to make all sorts of things including: an advent calendar (1-25 taken), a valet-style hook board for keys at the front door, embellished napkin holders, to use as present wrapping tie-ons, and to just display in a glass box. Like I said, we’re keeping it simple. Stamped brass number tags, $3.50 each.
